The 100m long, 13 chain bridge over the DaDu river (大渡河) (JinSha) at LuDing was built in 1701 and is very famous for the (legendary) battle in May 1935 when the red army led by Mao ZeDong during the long march crossed. Various historical accounts of the battle differ greatly. The DaDu feeds the YangTze and is also famous for the June 1786 earthquake landslide caused flood that killed 100,000 people downstream. The PuBuGou dam under construction in this rugged and narrow valley will relocate 100,000 people, take 7 years to complete, and produce 1.5 times the power of Hover Dam by around 2012.
